A Brief History of Monckton Shirts
Juliet and Christopher Monckton started a business manufacturing premium quality shirts in the 1980’s and supplied them to leading specialist retailers. Having established a very good reputation for quality, they decided to start selling the shirts under their own brand name in 1994 by mail order from a base in Pitlochry in Scotland. After two years of trading, they achieved annual sales of around 20,000 shirts a very fine achievement for the period.
In the autumn of 1995 a retail entrepreneur Michael Goldstone approached the Monckton’s to sell their shirts from a retail shop in the Kings Road London SW3. An agreement was reached between them making Monckton shirts available by mail order and through a retail shop in London which resulted in further positive growth.
In 1996, Mr. Goldstone offered to buy the entire business from the Monckton’s and a successful transfer was concluded. The shop in the Kings Road was a huge success, but in the autumn of 1997, a very large premium was offered by a French Wine Retailer for the shop unit which Mr. Goldstone could not possibly refuse.
This resulted in the Monckton brand and business being put up for sale and they were acquired by the Morrant Group Ltd a specialist leisure related Mail Order Company. The Company is also the owner of the world famous cricket ball brand Dukes which was established in 1760 and whose products are used in Test Matches to this day. Since then, the shirts have been sold exclusively by mail order and now on line. The shirts were featured for sale in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph newspaper and Real Business Magazine which enabled the company to build up a substantial customer base.
The very high standards of quality and service established by the Monckton’s and subsequently by Mr. Goldstone are being maintained by the Morrant Group.
